Some biotechnological innovations that are used as alternatives to conventional methods of breeding for pest resistance are reviewed under the following subject headings: genetic engineering; entomopathogens; construction of novel NPVs (nuclear polyhedral viruses), including Bacillus thuringiensis; entomopathogenic fungi; fermentation technology; mass production of NPV in insect tissue culture; transgenic plants and pest resistance; and safety considerations.
