Genetic engineering in plant breeding

A brief survey is presented under the following headings: introduction; basis of gene transfer in plants; transgenic useful plants (virus resistance; fungal and bacterial resistance; insect resistance; herbicide resistance; other work); and conclusion. A decade of genetic engineering has made available an increasing number of useful genes and a few techniques that allow foreign genes to be introduced into plants.
