Genetic engineering of disease and pest resistance in plants: Present state of the art

Different approaches currently used to create resistance against pathogens and pests by genetic engineering are summarized in this review. Emphasis is put on novel transgenic lines which have been engineered and tested in the greenhouse or in the field to improve resistance against pathogenic viruses, bacteria, fungi and insects. Strategies with the potential to succeed are briefly discussed.
