The best developed system for genetic engineering of insect resistance into plants uses an insecticidal gene from Bacillus thuringiensis. This can provide effective control of economically important caterpillar pests. Trials have begun in Australia with the first transgenic insect-resistant cotton plants. Although the results are impressive, care must be taken that insects do not develop resistance.
