Genetic evaluation of buffaloes for milk yield using the animal model

Data on the milk yield of 9409 Italian buffalo cows in 33 333 lactations were analysed. Lactation milk yield averaged 1963 kg, with a standard deviation of 614 kg, and lactation duration averaged 268+or-67 days. Age at calving ranged from 20 months to 26 yr. The statistical model incorporated herd-yr-season of calving, age class and lactation number as fixed effects, and random additive genetic and permanent environmental effects.
