Genetic gain in the common bean breeding programme performed at the south and upper Paranaiba regions of Minas Gerais State in the seventies and eighties

Statistical analyses of data on seed yield from advanced variety trials of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) at 10 locations during 16 crop seasons from 1972 to 1991 revealed that the total genetic gain was 700.2 kg/ha, giving an annual average gain of 1.9%, which is comparatively similar to those gains attained in programmes performed with other crops in Brazil.
