Physiological changes associated with breeding, especially for improved yield, are reviewed under these headings and subheadings: introduction; general improvements in tuber yield (the mid-1800s to 1950; and 1950 to the present); tuber characteristics related to potential crop growth and yield modified through plant breeding (absolute dormant period; physiological aging; and sprouting pattern); crop characteristics modified by breeding and guidelines for further increases in tuber yield (canopy development and architecture; photosynthesis and nitrogen nutrition; harvest index and dry matter content; stress tolerance); and concluding remarks.
