Genetic improvement and commercialization of the African perennial castor (Ricinus communis L.) plant

Castor is indigenous to eastern Africa but is now naturalized in most other parts of Africa, being found in Zimbabwe as a multitude of different types along roads, rivers and drains, as well as near villages, homesteads and around farmers' fields. The plant can be grown as a commercial crop for its oil, which has a wide variety of properties, and plants can survive for several years.
