This paper, based on the Presidential address delivered at the AGM of the Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding on 15 May 1992 at New Delhi, discusses quality breeding with respect to definitions of quality, quality characters, morphological features of the seed, breeding for development of new genotypes, uniformity, environmental interactions, biochemical profile, anti-quality factors, maternal effects, objectives of breeding programmes and the physiology of growth and development.
