Genetic improvement in the Holstein breed in Italy

Genetic improvement in the Holstein breed in Italy

British Cattle Breeders' Club Digest ( 47): 75-86

In 1990, there were about 1.5 million Holstein cows in Italy, of which 802 654 were registered. The average herd size is 59 cows. Over 800 000 Holsteins were milk recorded in 1990; all are registered cattle. About 300 young bulls, selected from the top 1% of cows on the basis of an index (ILQ) incorporating milk yield, and fat and protein contents, are progeny tested annually. The index gives a high weight to protein (ILQ = 4.5 x (-0.173 x milk + fat + 11.3 x protein)).
