Genetic improvement of Persian walnut by intraspecific hybridization

Breeding objectives for Juglans regia are discussed, including lateral bud fruitfulness, lateness of bud break and flowering, apomixy, homogamy or protogyny, chilling requirement, winter hardiness, tolerance of blight (Xanthomonas campestris pv. juglandis) and anthracnose and fruit and kernel quality. Results are briefly presented of heritability studies for 18 quantitative traits in 2400 hybrids at the University of California, Davis, USA.
