Accounting for traits related to milk composition is today essential in dairy selection. Within-breed genetic variability of protein content of milk (PC) and fat content of milk (FC) is characterized by : (1) high heritability coefficients, (2) a lower genetic standard-deviation for PC than for FC, (3) a strong genetic correlation between PC and FC, and (4) a slight antagonism with quantity of milk. In most situations, French global indexes, such as INEL (dairy economic index) or ISU (breed synthetic index) allow to combine the farmer's objectives regarding genetic improvement of their herd.
