Genetic improvement of the seed oil yield and the agronomical suitability of Calendula officinalis as an industrial crop

Single-plant progenies of C. officinalis, whose oil contains the C18-fatty acid calendulic acid, showed great variability for growth period, number of fertile female florets, seeds per flower head, and 1000-seed weight. Some genotypes close to the ideotype of an oil plant variety were identified. Marked heterosis effects in the F1 were found with regard to plant height, yield and oil content. Inbreeding depression was apparent in a comparison between the I5 and I3 generations.
