Growth-regulating activity of monoethyl esters of aliphatic dicarboxylic acids

The effect of monoethyl esters of aliphatic dicarboxylic acids of a straight chain with the following general formula: HOOC-(CH-2)-n-COOC-2H-5,on the growth of 7-day-old pea seedlings and 4-day-old cumcumber hypocotyls was studied. It was shown that succinic and adipic (n=2 and 4) acids derivatives had highest retarding activity. Monoethylsuccinate interaction with auxins, gibberellins and cytokinins was studied in model systems. It was found that monoethylsuccinate had an antagonistic effect on the three groups of growth stimulators. It has been assumed that the inhibiting effect of the retardants on growth could be explained by the inhibition of the typical for the auxins, gibberellins and cytokinins physiological reaction.
