Light and fluorescence microscopy performed during infection of sunflower seedlings by P. halstedii showed that penetration of roots and the lower part of the hypocotyl occurred in both susceptible and resistant genotypes. After penetrating susceptible seedlings, the pathogen developed intercellular hyphae and intracellular haustoria, leading to systemic invasion.
