Abstract
The hydraulic conductivity of a silage has an effect on the magnitude of the hydrostatic pressure that may develop in a silo containing wet material. To provide relevant information for silos containing alfalfa silage, 48 hydraulic conductivity tests were conducted. Both horizontal and vertical conductivities were measured at four values of void ratio and three values of moisture content. Logarithms of the horizontal and vertical conductivities varied nearly linearly with void ratio, and to a lesser extent with moisture content. At a void ratio of five and a moisture content of 68% the horizontal conductivity was about 16 times the vertical. Equations are provided for estimating horizontal and vertical conductivities of alfalfa silage in the void ratio range of 4.0 to 6.4 and with moisture content ranging from 64% to 72%.
