Implications of intellectual property rights for agricultural sector in India

This article examines the implications for Indian agriculture of the negotiations on intellectual property rights (IPR) at the Uruguay round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) talks in 1989. Indian law under the 1970 Patent Act restricted the use and copying of food, medicine and agrochemical processes for only 5-7 years, in contrast to the much stricter controls over use of patents in Western countries.
