Rations with 50, 25 and 10% of dietary energy from barley, maize and potatoes were studied in steers using total metabolism experiments. Energy and nutrient digestibility of the diets were also measured in wethers. Crude fibre content of the diets ranged from 166 to 271 g and starch content from 69 to 330 g/kg DM. Daily starch intake of steers ranged from 575 to 2739 g at 1.7x maintenance to 365 and 1804 g at 1.1x maintenance. Energy digestibility of the diets in steers with 50; 25; and 10% of dietary energy from barley, maize and potatoes was 73.5, 73.9 and 75.3; 72.2, 71.6 and 72.4; and 68.8, 69.5 and 69.8%, respectively.
