Influences of pot spacing, pot size and the number of transplantings on growth and plant quality in Dieffenbachia

Relationships between cultural conditions (pot spacing, pot size and the number of transplantings) and plant growth were studied with Dieffenbachia sp. cv. "Camilla" grown in a greenhouse pot culture. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Wider pot spacing brought about the increased dry weight of tops and roots of the plant. But too much spacing decreased the top volume. 2. There was not much variation in photosynthetic rates among upper leaves with different plant spacings. With wider plant space the photosynthetic rate increased on lower leaves. 3. An increase in pot size influenced certain growth factors: the number of leaves, the number of branches, fresh weight and dry weight of tops and roots, and leaf area. Among them leaf area was affected most. 4. Optimum pot spacings based on the optimum leaf area index were suggested to be 19.2 plants/m-2 for a 15-cm pot, 23.4 plants/m-2 for a 12-cm pot and 34.0 plants/m-2 for a 9-cm pot, in consideration of productivity and quality of the plant. 5. Cuttings transplanted to pots after having been rooted in a nursery bed exhibited more vigorous growth than those, not transplanted which had been originally rooted in pots. On the other hand, when the number of transplanting times exceeded two, it caused ill-effects on the growth of leaves and roots.
