Inheritance of ripening time of Japanese pear was investigated using 20 full-sib families. Frequency distribution in each family could be approximated to normal distribution indicating that this character was inherited polygenically. Significant regression coefficients and correlation coefficients were obtained between mid-parental and offspring values; the regression was in the range 0.87-1.05, the correlation being 0.92-0.99. Heritability of ripening time was considered to be extremely high.
