Intake of grazing dairy cows. 1. Effect of energy supplementation on forage substitution rate and milk production

The objective of this experiment was to estimate the effect of supplementation with maize grain on herbage intake and milk yield in dairy cows in early lactation. 18 Argentine Friesian cows grazed in spring a pasture of perennial ryegrass and white clover. In 3 groups of 6 cows, cows were randomly allocated to the following treatments: T0: 0 kg maize; T1: 4 kg maize; and T2: 8 kg maize. The trial lasted for 10 weeks, beginning in Oct. 1986.
