Integrating conservation, recreation and agriculture through the market place

Integrating conservation, recreation and agriculture through the market place

Ecos 14(2): 36-46

A 'market-led' approach to countryside conservation and recreation in the UK has evolved through such schemes as Countryside Stewardship and Tir Cymen (a market-based approach to the management of farmland in Wales). This paper examines the case of integrating conservation, recreation and agriculture in the UK. The key to the market-led or incentives approach is the creation of a system whereby rural landowners and managers can sell their role as managers of the countryside.
