Intrahepatic portal vein changes and haemostatic behaviour of blood platelets in patients with hepatosplenic schistosomiasis

, : Intrahepatic portal vein changes and haemostatic behaviour of blood platelets in patients with hepatosplenic schistosomiasis. Egyptian Journal of Bilharziasis 14(1): 35-42

The histopathology and ultrastructure of portal vein changes and platelet behaviour were studied in a group of patients with hepatosplenic schistosomiasis and hypersplenism. The pathological changes in the portal vein ranged from simple endothelial cell duplication with thickening of the subendothelial layer, to complete endothelial cell injuries with interstitial subendothelial oedema and smooth muscle irritation, fibrosis, and vascular occlusion.
