Introducing a national mastitis control programme
A milk payment scheme introduced in Oct. 1990 in Northern Ireland (NI), UK, to encourage milk producers to meet the requirements of the proposed EC Milk Hygiene and Quality Directive consists of paying a premium for milk containing <=200 000 somatic cells/ml and imposing progressively increasing penalties on milk with >400 000 somatic cells/ml.
