The 2nd edition of this standard text (published 1976) contained 466 pages. This rewritten 3rd edition contains 549 pp. It has been enlarged to incorporate the advances made in the fields of ultrastructure, speciation, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, epidemiology, neurobiology and immunology. In addition to numerous new tables, some 70 new text figures have been added and many of the older figures in the earlier edition have been redrawn.
