The dry fruit of Tetrapleura tetraptera (traditionally used as a spice in flavouring pepper soups in Southern Nigeria) was assayed for toxic constituents in the fruit shell, pulp and seed. Toxic constituents found included hydrogen cyanide, phytates, oxalates, tannins and saponins.
