Efficient utilization of the US hardwood supply depends upon developing better methods of grading lumber and assigning allowable property values to structural lumber produced from hardwood species. A study was undertaken to evaluate the properties of lumber cut from logs of the northern red oak (Quercus velutina and Q. rubra) species group and tested in bending, and in tension and compression parallel to the grain.
