, : Investigation of the occurrence of salmonellae, Yersinia enterocolitica and thermophilic Campylobacter in dogs and cats from the province of Bari. Giornale di Malattie Infettive e Parassitaire 44(3): 216-220

From July 1987 to July 1989 faecal samples from 1021 dogs and 555 cats from the province of Bari, Italy, were examined. Y. enterocolitica was found in 91 dogs (8.9%) and 30 cats (5.4%), Campylobacter jejuni in 89 dogs (8.7%) and 3 cats (0.5%) and Salmonella in 59 dogs (5.7%) and 2 cats (0.3%). Twelve species of Salmonella were identified, most isolates belonging to S. typhimurium (18) and S. kottbus (15). Season and sex did not influence the presence of bacteria.

The taxonomy of Yersinia enterocolitica as well as their classification methods are still unreliable with respect to their pathogenicity. Therefore, a basis of evaluation was established by using extended biochemical tests (API-20-E, API-50-CH) an...

Campylobacter spp. were isolated from faeces from 9 of 196 hares (six strains of C. jejuni, two of C. laridis and one of C. coli), but all of 73 roe deer were negative. All 269 faeces samples were negative for Salmonella.
