In a study in Siberia, Russia, respiratory CO2 gas-exchange (r.g.e.) was investigated in field-collected larvae of Pieris brassicae, P. rapae and Phytometra gamma using an infrared analyser allowing observations both on individual larvae and on groups. The species were shown to vary in their r.g.e. rates, and the r.g.e. for Pieris brassicae was lower than for laboratory-reared larvae of this species, which were also included in the investigations.
