Isoenzyme electrophoresis and plant systematics

Isoenzyme electrophoresis has provided useful data for addressing a wide variety of questions in plant systemtics and evolution. The primary advantage of this method is that genetic similarities and differences may be quantified and the number of gene loci included in the study may be ascertained. The simple, codominant inheritance of allozymes allows one to trace the process of hybrid speciation at the diploid level. Allelic data are most valuable when combined with information from other areas such as morphology, cytogenetics, and geographical distribution. To introduce isoenzyme electrophoresis adopted to modern plant taxonomy, three kinds of gel electrophoresis were compared in this paper and quantification process of the electrophoresis data was introduced. The papers, especially those of Korean taxonomists, about the isozyme electrophoresis of algae and vascular plants were sorted. Systematic value of electrophoretic data were reviewed and discussed.
