A total of 291 schoolchildren (140 boys and 151 girls aged 5-15 years) were screened for malaria in Hyderabad city, Andhra Pradesh, India. Twenty-two of the 291 were positive for malaria (20 due to Plasmodium vivax and 2 to P. falciparum). Seventy-two of the children (including 14 of those with a laboratory diagnosis of malaria) had a history of pyrexia in the 2 weeks preceding the enquiry.
