In the West European context migration is a sensitive indicator of regional economic health. Most regions have at some time experienced both internal and external migration. This paper begins by looking at the causes of rural outmigration, before going on to look at spatio-temporal patterns of intensity and destination. The consequences of departure for the communities left behind are examined, and the possible impacts of the return migration movements of recent years.
