Minimizing the threat of seedborne pathogens in crop germ plasm: elimination of pea seedborne mosaic virus from the USDA-ARS germ plasm collection of Pisum sativum

The US pea germplasm collection was used as an experimental model as its stocks have been implicated in several outbreaks of pea seed-borne mosaic potyvirus (PSbMV) and this has resulted in under-utilization of this genetic resource. For each accession, 50-100 seeds were collected and planted. Any seedlings showing PSbMV symptoms were discarded.
