Molecular signalling between Bradyrhizobium japonicum and soyabean is reviewed. The plant exudes specific flavonoids that induce nod gene expression in the bacteria. NodD activated transcription of the other nod genes in response to the flavonoids. The nod genes encode proteins involved in the production of the complementary signal molecule that elicits the necessary host response for nodulation. Regulation of the nod gene is reviewed.
