Physiological-biochemical and photoenergetic features of the bread winter wheat mutants induced by chemical mutagens

We have studied the activity of nitrate reductase, content of cytoplasmic and structural proteins and of the plastid and cellular sap pigments, the area and specific mass of leaves, the number of reaction centers of photosystems-1 and -2, the size of antenna of the light-collecting and focusing complex, and the intensity of photosynthesis in the first (8-day sprouts) and flag leaves (phase of ear formation - beginning of flowering). The leaves were taken from the initial variety, zoned standard varieties, and constant groups of mutants ("dense-eared", "productive", and "spherococcoid") induced by chemical mutagens (N-nitroso-N-alkylurea, 1,4-bis-diazoacetyl-butane, and ethylenimine). Despite the morphogenetic differences, the mutants are characterized by higher physiological-biochemical and photoenergetic indices, as compared with the initial variety and zoned standard varieties. Effective selection of highly productive and high-protein strains is possible using these indices.
