Pneumonia in fattening pigs: lesions produced by the interaction of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae and Aujeszky virus

A histological study of the pleuropneumonic lungs of 2 fattening pigs infected with Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae serotype 1 showed a severe fibrinous-necrotizing bronchitis and bronchiolitis, vasculitis and perivasculitis, changes that were not related to Actinobacillus infection. Electron microscope studies showed viral particles with a size and shape corresponding to herpesvirus in the nucleus and cytoplasm of the bronchial and bronchiolar epithelium.
