Population morphology of Proteocephalus torulosus (Cestoda, Proteocephalidae) from cyprinids of the Karelian lakes

Population morphology of Proteocephalus torulosus (Cestoda, Proteocephalidae) from cyprinids of the Karelian lakes

Ecological Parasitology 1(2): 135-149, 213

Differences in morphological characters (shape and size of scolex, suckers and proglottids, number and size of testes and size of cirrus pouch) of P. torulosus from Leuciscus idus, L. leuciscus and Alburnus alburnus in lakes Pjaozero, Korpijarvi and Rindozero in Karelia (Russia) were analyzed. The host was found to play a key role in the formation of morphological groupings of the cestode, giving rise to specific ecoforms. This 'hostal polymorphism' has an adaptive character.
