Population studies in taxa of Saxifraga sect. Porphyrion (Saxifragaceae) in the Alps: I. Hybrids of S. biflora and S. oppositifolia

Population studies in taxa of Saxifraga sect. Porphyrion (Saxifragaceae) in the Alps: I. Hybrids of S. biflora and S. oppositifolia

Phyton Horn 34(1): 143-167

As a first part of an analysis of Saxifraga sect. Porphyrion in the Alps the identification of S. macropetala (S. biflora subsp. macropetala) as a hybrid is presented. Detailed analysis of characters in 24 populations and herbarium studies show that S. macropetala has unstable, intermediate characters between S. biflora and S. oppositifolia. The reduced female fertility permits the production of hybrid swarms.
