In a trial established in 1982, apple cultivars Golden Delicious and Starking Delicious grafted on M.9, M.26 or MM.106 rootstocks were planted at 4 x 4 m in single rows and trained as palmettes (624 trees/ha) or planted at 3.50 x 1.75 m in single rows and trained as slender spindles (1623 trees/ha). Trunk diameter, canopy size, fruit yield/plant and weight of prunings were recorded each year from 1983 to 1987.
