Possibilities for reducing the nitrate input into groundwater through a decrease in the excessive use of nitrogen in agriculture

For the period 1984-88, agricultural areas in the former German Federal Republic received on average 90 kg surplus N/ha (organic plus mineral N inputs, minus removal). Using multiple regression equations, agricultural statistics were combined with natural site parameters to provide estimates of the N balance for small areas (e.g. 3 x3 km grids).
