Grassland management, calving date and stocking density play a vital part in successful dairy farming in the Irish Republic. Keeping cows with high genetic potential for roughage intake, providing good, simple and efficient housing, especially for milking and overwintering, and pasture divided into equal sections by electric fencing, with access to paths and water, are suitable measures for optimizing returns.
