Reclamation of a soil contaminated with cadmium

The reclamation of Cd-contaminated land near the town of Schwelm is described. The soil was first analysed for Cd by 3 methods, including test plants, and for humus. It was then worked to ensure that the Cd in it was distributed evenly and treated with organic matter in the form of highly reactive humic substances. A special compost was prepared for the purpose. The soil was then limed to bring the pH to nearly neutral. Treatment of 2 ha took 10 working days.
