Samples of the A and C horizons of two humic gley soils from Brazil were used in a greenhouse experiment to study the effect of a rice crop on the redox status of flooded soils. The experimental units consisted of pots containing 4 litres of soil treated with NPK with and without lime. One month after rice planting the soils were flooded and thereafter a 7 cm water layer was maintained above the soil surface. The parameters pe and pH were measured periodically in situ.
