In the rhizosphere of various dicotyledonous cultivated plants (Pisum sativum, Vicia sativa, Helianthus annuus) a decrease of the redox level could be measured close to the root tip using platinum and antimony microelectrodes. There were no changes of redox conditions in the rhizosphere of wheat (Triticum aestivum) and oat (Avena sativa). The reducing capacity of the roots of the dicotyledonous plants is probably due to the release of reducing exudates.
