Reduction of adverse effect of sodic water on greengram (Phaseolus radiatus) by treatment of soil and water with gypsum

In a pot experiment in 1988, greengram was grown on sandy loam soil, pH 7.4 and electrical conductivity of 0.95 dS/m. Each pot was watered with a solution of sodium carbonate (2.5, 5.0 or 10.0 meq/litre) and given no gypsum, water passed through a gypsum bag or an equivalent of 3 t of gypsum/ha mixed into the soil. Gypsum application increased seed yield while an increase from 5 to 10 meq sodium carbonate in the solution decreased yield.
