Relations between self-selected intake of nutrients and body fat accumulation in rats fed ad libitum or for 8-hours a day

, : Relations between self-selected intake of nutrients and body fat accumulation in rats fed ad libitum or for 8-hours a day. Korean Journal of Nutrition 25(1): 12-21

The relations between self-selected macronutrient intake and body weight gain and body fat were investigated in male Sprague-Dawley rats given 3 isoenergetic diets with varying carbohydrate, protein and fat contents for 8 h/day or freely for 12 weeks. The results showed that the rats chose a moderately high and constant carbohydrate intake and that protein intake increased with age. Protein stimulated appetite resulting in high weight gain and increased fat deposition.
