Release of plant-feeding weevils for biological control of musk thistle in Tennessee

Release of plant-feeding weevils for biological control of musk thistle in Tennessee

Tennessee Farm and Home Science ( 165): 26-29

In field trials conducted in Tennessee in 1989-90, between 300 and 400 Rhinocyllus conicus and approx. 125 Trichosirocalus horridus were released at each of 11 sites to evaluate their efficiency in controlling musk thistle (Carduus thoermeri). Two years after initial release, approx. 60-80% of plants were infested with weevils, with up to 10-30 eggs/bud being observed.
