Results of a grassland renovation programme for hay meadows set up in the southern alps of France in 1987 are discussed. Grasslands were classified into 3 types according to altitude, floristic composition and environmental factors. Renovation techniques tested in 1988 were: fertilizer application, early cutting, oversowing with sainfoin scarification at the end of winter, ending autumn grazing earlier and weed control of very degraded pasture.
