While the degree to which spectators identify with sports teams may mediate fan reactions, a valid and reliable measure of team identification has not been available for use in research. The article reports on the construction of such a scale. Several behavioural, affective, and cognitive reactions among sports spectators are used to validate the team identification measure. The study sample comprised 188 male and female undergraduates at the University of Kansas, USA.
