Sprouting behaviour of sweet cherries after pruning

Sprouting behaviour of sweet cherries after pruning

Gartenbau Magazin 1(1-2): 68-69

Trials were conducted over several years on 9- to 11-year-old trees of cultivars Hedelfinger, Bing and Napoleon on Prunus mahaleb rootstocks, pruned in Feb., Apr., Aug., Sep., Oct. or Nov. Pruning mainly stimulated the sprouting of terminal buds on flowering shoots >3 years old, but only horizontal branches (those at angles of 60-90 degrees with the leading stem) formed adequate lateral shoots.
